The end of another school year is upon us ... but not before we get through state testing! Parents, teachers, and even students often ask me about tips when getting ready to take the end-of-grade tests in elementary school. I've compiled a list of tips and strategies that you my find helpful.

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "questrial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">When you are stressed or sleepy try these:

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "questrial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Think of a #sunnythought (like I can handle this, I got this, or I’ll keep trying my best)

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "questrial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Set pencil down, close eyes and silently count to 10

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "questrial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Visualize doing well on the test and letting your worries float away

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "questrial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Breathe silently and deeply through the nose. Exhale through the mouth.

A "cool-down" kit had too many options and the student ended up tearing up the kit and throwing it at others. To help the student have a little more structure I created a chart, with approved strategies from his teacher, that he can choose from. A couple of the strategies are super desirable, so to ensure the student wasn't getting mad just to avoid work we made a system where once he has used a strategy for the day he should choose a different one later if he is needing it.

Essentially I created a social story that is hands on. I purchased scrapbook pages and put "When I get Mad I can ..." Then I attached the little clear command hooks on the bottom (I was afraid they would be too heavy and tug on the plastic cover of the page, but that wasn't the case). Then on the hooks there are 5 strategies (visual and written) that the student can choose from. I'm so excited how it turned out :)
App. Ever!I just found an awesome app. It's for upstanders (my new change this year from bystander). The best part- its a game. I know some of my upstanders will love it. I would love to figure out if I can get it up on the SmartBoard for my upstanders lesson. Kids would love it (and this app was only .99). Woo-hoo. Score Ms. Bruce.

I (Heart) School Counselinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17992281219379605399noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199389766811730913.post-12783287870804985182013-09-08T15:05:00.001-07:002013-09-08T15:05:58.999-07:00And just like that ... A brand new year!I clearly need a course in blogging so that I don't drop off of the face of the planet when (ahem) testing begins. Incidentally I would like to give props to the state of NC. If you at all turned on your television this summer you probably heard the state of North Carolina mentioned every time they talked about education. Amongst the many things they did wrong, the one thing they finally got right was removing test coordination from School Counselors! Hallelujah! So hopefully I will be better at blogging this year. I am also happy to say that this year I am fully implementing the ASCA National Model at my school. Our district doesn't require it, so of course my first two years I was just trying to hold my head above water (while still implementing parts). This year it's on! I can't wait to report back to you. Hope you're having a great start to your year!

I (Heart) School Counselinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17992281219379605399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199389766811730913.post-16807502625244483922013-02-16T19:53:00.000-08:002013-02-16T19:53:17.164-08:00Try 3 Then Me

Made Some Calming Jars

I've decided to be a bit quicker about making my counseling crafts when I discover them. It started with these calming jars. I started with one, got a little glitter happy, and ended up with three. It turns out if you add a ton of glitter to one, it might just be too much :) So a little back and forth, some hot water, and voila! Can't wait to bring these to school on Tuesday (yay President's Day).

If you have some cool counseling craft ideas I would love to hear about them!
Woo-Hoo! I'm so excited that it is National School Counseling Week. My single favorite week of the year. Here at I (Heart) School Counseling I love to advocate for our profession. There are so many wonderful school counselors out there I can't think of a greater profession to give props to :)

This year, my second year as a professional school counselor, I am continuing my efforts last year by going on the morning news every day (hopefully not over the top) and reading a version of the wonderful words put forth by the American School Counseling Association. (If you're interested get them here down at the bottom of the page). In addition, I want our staff to know just how much I value them and they make my counseling program possible. And, since it is the month of love, I'm going to make a version of this super cool idea I found on Pinterest. Check it out here! I haven't come up with my notecard idea to put them on, but it will most definitely have to do with love.

Somehow I made it a list of amazing counseling sites/blogs (the description is slightly off, but the publicity is nice). Such an honor, especially since I am quite new to blogging (and counseling too)! Just wanted to send out a BIG thanks to anyone who has viewed this blog!!! Check it out ... there are 100 sites on this link and so many are amazing!!!!
Since I can't see every student right away, for those who just need some reminders of strategies I created these "Be A Gecko Problem-Solver" cards. I heart these cards! On the back of the card are 11 strategies kids can try to solve their problem. There is also a reminder at the bottom to seek an adult if their is a safety concern, otherwise the good-ole standby of "try three before me" can be used. They just arrived. I think I will give one to each teacher to put in the classroom. What do you guys think?

I've added some things that I hope you will enjoy, including this awesome book shelf of some of my most favorite books to use in counseling. In addition I finally figured out how to put the Pin It button with each of my posts. So, if you find one of my posts to be helpful and you would like to pass it along please hit Pin It and add to your Pinterest page.

Hi all, and welcome back to school :) This year I am trying lots of firsts. First blog ... check. First year where I know all of the students ... check. First year where I truly embrace the leadership role in the school now that I have created a firm foundation for myself and my comprehensive counseling program ... check. Along with this I decided this year that I was going to be directly involved with creating and continuing the positive school climate with our staff. How did I do this? I found a cute idea and decided to join with our social worker to let our staff know just how much we appreciate them and how we love to collaborate! After our meet the teacher event tonight we placed them in front of every staffers door. If you're on a budget (which I always am) we split the costs of the hand soaps. And if you have a Big Lots around ... they're only a buck each (and look like the ones from Bath & Body Works)!

As we spend our last few weeks recouping, rejuvenating, and re-energizing ourselves for the upcoming school year I like to think about how to best explain to stakeholders what the role of the elementary school counselor is. AND, to best do that I always refer first to ASCA. Here's a nice link with helpful information (and even videos to show parents). Enjoy!

So happy I stumbled upon this one! Here's a screen capture of one of these cute guys created by Mariah, the creator of Giggles Galore. She also gives step-by-step instructions on how to make "him."
I
know the teachers at my school are going to love this go-to box after
we do a tattle lesson. For their sake, I think I'll do it much earlier
this year than last. I can't wait!
Happy Pinteresting!

I have begun to make some time (during this relaxing summer) to reassess my first year as a school counselor and the program I created. Luckily I had the freedom to recreate the program that was already at my school. The former counselor became the assistant principal, which for some could have been intimidating, but she was very honest about me being able to do whatever I wanted. I digress. The point is, as I have been thinking about what worked and what didn't, I have have checked out all of your blogs, and then found myself finding idea after idea on .... Pinterest! Genius Idea! So, if you're like me and you're either new or new to technology Pinterest can be a lifesaver!

Summers for many school counselors (like teachers) is a time to rejuvenate and do some self-care before the school year starts up again. While doing so you may be tempted to take a look at your SC program and make some additions, changes, tweaks, etc. WELL, have I found the site to rival all sites. http://www.elementaryschoolcounseling.org Marissa, the creator of this site, has a resource page that will blow your mind. So if you're like me, and just can't stay completely away from counseling during the summer, check out her site ... it is well worth it :)

I wish I was at this year's conference. One cool thing I just found out was that ASCA has an app for the conference this year. Apparently I missed this last when they did the same in Seattle. You can also just go to http://m.core-apps.com/asca2012 to view the app. It has all of the sessions (including handouts)!!!!!! If I can't be there this might be the next best thing!
I (Heart) School Counselinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17992281219379605399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199389766811730913.post-91143362143420778992012-06-12T10:56:00.000-07:002012-06-12T11:04:41.006-07:00

I just stumbled upon a fab blog, The Teacher's Lounge. There is a great post about classroom management, http://blog.reallygoodstuff.com/?p=9179, something I'm always trying to improve. After repeatedly hearing in grad school "don't reinvent the wheel" I decided not to. Instead I seek out great ideas that are already out there and then tweak them to make them my own. My blog will highlight great ideas and the people that came up with them. Happy Counseling!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
